A JEALOUS mother-of-five who was caught on video lashing out at her partner with a knife has been sentenced to jail.
Kaylor Marie Butterworth started a fight with the father of her 14-month-old baby when she grabbed a knife and slashed her partner’s arm.
The Townsville District Court heard in the early hours of August 1, 2019, Butterworth started an argument with her partner over Facebook messages he sent to another woman.
Crown Prosecutor Molly Mahlouzarides presented to the court a video recording from a phone showing Butterworth attacking her partner.
The footage showed Butterworth hiding a kitchen knife behind her back before lunging at her partner twice, cutting his left forearm that required five stitches.
Both Butterworth’s criminal history and her partner’s were presented to the court with similar domestic violence offences.
The 34-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken to the watch-house where Butterworth took part in a police interview.
She pleaded guilty to one count of wounding and one count of contravention of a domestic violence order.
Defence barrister Dean Marley said Butterworth had a lifelong problem with alcohol but had recently completed alcohol rehabilitation programs and was studying a certificate IV in Christian ministry and theology.
Mr Marley said Butterworth was deeply remorseful for her actions and when she viewed the video she was “embarrassed and ashamed”.
Judge John Croker acknowledged Butterworth’s tremulous relationship but said that her actions could have been fatal.
“It was confronting to see a blade of that size being struck at another person,” he said. “The consequences could have been far more serious if the blade had struck a vital organ, you might be here facing much more serious charges or in the Supreme Court.”
Judge Croker took into account the early plea of guilty, co-operation with law enforcement and the supportive victim impact statement from her partner forgiving Butterworth.
Butterworth cried in the dock as she was sentenced to 18 months’ jail wholly suspended with an operational period of two years.
