A man who allegedly seriously assaulted another man after the Cowboys vs Knights game this year has appeared in court after the victim died days later.

A man alleged to have been in an assault that left the victim seriously injured and days later dead, has appeared in court for the first time since being charged.

Justin John Jerry Prowse appeared in Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning after he was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and arrested at the scene on September 14, the night of the North Queensland Cowboys vs Newcastle Knights game at Country Bank Stadium.

Police allege there was an altercation at the sporting venue at 9:55pm where a 38-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was transported to Townsville Hospital, however was found dead at a home near Mackay five days later.

The results of the man’s post-mortem are unconfirmed and will form part of the police investigation.

Defence lawyer Nick Douglas from Legal Aid Queensland said a brief of evidence was ordered two months ago on Mr Prowse’s behalf.

Police prosecutor Joseph Kurtin said there was no update from the prosecution side regarding the evidence files and sought an adjournment to follow it up.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan enlarged the man’s bail and adjourned the matter to December 17, Mr Prowse is not expected to appear.
