UPDATE: Workplace Health and Safety has confirmed it is investigating “all aspects” of the death of a Vietnam veteran.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the incident was workplace-related.
Mr Smith was a sapper in the 17th Construction Squadron during his service in the war from 1967-68. Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Queensland state president Peter Hindle said he offered his family and friends his deepest sympathies on behalf of the organisation.
“We offer our condolences to John’s family and loved ones and also extend it to members of the VVAA Burdekin,” he said.
“He was a lovely man, very nice and well liked. I found him a very pleasant man and he was a nice man to associate with.”
The retreat is a project of the Burdekin Sub Branch of Vietnam Veterans and provides a safe environment for veterans to camp and relax. It is located on the banks of the Burdekin River, about an hour from Ayr.
