A 62-year-old midwife-turned-comedian will be taking to the stage at next month’s NAFA for an hour-long show about her “very ordinary life” – and she says men in their 20s are her biggest fans.
Sarah Stewart has been sharpening her stage skills in comedy events across Canberra and Sydney for the last four years and has decided Townsville will be the place she launches her first ever solo show.
“I get a whole range of people coming to the shows, I’m a very ordinary person and I talk about having an ordinary life as a mother and wife,” Mrs Stewart said.
“But my biggest compliments come from men in their 20s. They must have very sad lives.”
Ms Stewart lives in Canberra, but has a daughter in Townsville and has attended the North Australian Festival of Arts several times as a spectator.
“I love NAFA because it has a festival feel without it being huge and overwhelming,” she said.
“My show is what you get after 40 years of being married, a mother and working as a midwife. In other words, I’m knackered and planning my funeral in a Google Doc.”
Mrs Stewart says she’s “flying the flag” for women over 60 and proving there was more to life than babysitting and grandchildren.
Show: ‘Midwife Crisis’
When: Thursday October 3 (7.15pm), Friday October 4 (7pm).
