From the heart of Hungary to the sunny shores of North Queensland, Marta Bujna has brought a centuries-old tradition to life with her mouth-watering chimney cakes.
Her thriving market stall, Huns Delight, has quickly become a beloved fixture in Townsville, offering locals a delicious taste of authentic Hungarian culture.
Marta’s journey began with a simple yet profound moment back in Hungary.
During a casual afternoon gathering, she and her family found themselves cooking traditional Hungarian chimney cakes using a wooden spit.
As the sweet aroma filled the air, Marta had a revelation. “The lights come up,” she recalled, realising that she needed to bring this cherished tradition to her new home in Australia.
Relocating to Perth in 2012, Marta initially struggled to get her business off the ground. But in 2014, a move to Airlie Beach changed everything.
Her food quickly captured the hearts of both tourists and locals, with her chimney cakes and lángos — traditional fried bread — becoming the talk of the market scene.
Praised by many as the best Hungarian treats outside of Hungary, Marta’s creations drew rave reviews from all who tasted them.
“Many times, people come back to tell us, ‘That was the best ever we had,’” Marta said with a smile.
“To hear customers say that, it’s so good. This is why I’m doing it, really.”
Recently, Marta and her family made another big move, this time to Townsville, where they’ve set up shop at the Willows Markets and various local events.
While the customer base here is different from the tourist-heavy crowds of Airlie Beach, Marta is quickly building up a loyal following.
Huns Delight’s menu is a testament to the family’s dedication to both tradition and innovation.
On the savoury side, the lángos is a must try.
This Hungarian fried bread comes with a variety of toppings, from the classic combo of garlic, sour cream, and cheese to the more substantial lángos pockets, stuffed with melted cheese, crispy bacon, or tender beef, and finished with a sprinkle of spring onion, garlic, and a dollop of sour cream.
For those with a sweet tooth, the classic chimney cake is a fan favourite, rolled in cinnamon sugar for a crunchy, sweet exterior that’s pure comfort in every bite.
But if you’re in the mood for something more decadent, their chimney cone is the way to go. This modern twist on the traditional cake is filled to the brim with Nutella, ice cream, custard, and whipped cream, then drizzled with your choice of caramel or chocolate sauce.
The success of Huns Delight is truly a family affair. Marta’s daughters and niece are actively involved in the business, especially during busy times,
Looking ahead, Marta said she’s got big plans to open a semipermanent food truck location and is even considering offering cooking classes to share her Hungarian culinary traditions with more people.
“I definitely want to make it more popular and show it to more people,” she said.
