Giving the gift of confidence and self-esteem is what a Year 5 schoolboy is hoping to provide kids who are battling chronic diseases.

Finleigh Dowd has been growing his hair for more than three years so he can donate his locks to the Variety Children’s Charity.

The 10-year-old’s 40cm long hair will be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a long-term medical condition.

The Mundingburra State School student will cut his hair on March 26 at school assembly as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.

“I feel very happy that it is going to someone that has misfortune and I think they should be able to have hair as a child,” he said.

Finleigh has raised $2146 in five days to help beat blood cancer via his online World’s Greatest Shave campaign page. He said he was stunned at the response.

Finleigh’s dad Daniel Dowd said his son wanted to help a sick friend when he decided to grow his hair for charity.

“Finleigh thought it was a great idea knowing that one of his school mates had leukaemia," he said.
