Three rural communities in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service will receive welcome shots in the arm after plans were revealed to upgrade their ageing health facilities.
The communities of Hughenden, Richmond, and Home Hill will receive new and improved Multipurpose Health Services and a Health Service, as part of the state government’s more than $1bn Building Rural and Remote Health Program, to ensure access to world-class health care, no matter where they live.
The enhanced health facilities will deliver more contemporary clinical spaces, improving the patient and staff experience which will be designed in co-ordination with the community needs.
The Hughenden Multipurpose Health Service, the Richmond Multipurpose Health Service, and the Home Hill Health Service will commence procurement of consultants for the projects shortly, with the aim for construction to commence in 2025.
The construction program will provide local employment and training opportunities for local tradies, subcontractors, and apprentices, as well as the local economic opportunities that come with investment in any community.
Health Minister Shannon Fentiman said health staff doing a wonderful job caring for their communities deserved fit-for purpose and modern facilities to deliver their world class healthcare.
“The new and improved facilities will ensure essential healthcare closer to home for residents living in and near Hughenden, Home Hill, and Richmond,” Ms Fentiman said.
“I’m so proud that the Miles Government is delivering the healthcare infrastructure needed for these rural communities within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service.
“Our government remains dedicated in its commitment to delivering great healthcare for communities across North Queensland and other regional areas of the state.
Townsville HHS chief executive Kieran Keyes said patients from across north Queensland expect and deserve access to high-quality healthcare and health infrastructure in their communities, not just in major cities.
“We have a growing population in north Queensland, and our health infrastructure and services must keep up to deliver the care the community needs,” Mr Keyes said.
“These projects will replace the ageing infrastructure in some of our rural areas, ensuring the community has access to modern, clinical health facilities.
“Richmond Hospital hasn’t changed much in the thirty years since I first visited it as a student nurse, so I am looking forward to all of these developments.”
