A teacher is kickstarting teenagers’ personal and professional journeys by filling a deficit in their secondary studies.
Strive Lane has been 10 years in the making for high school teacher Joe Mikaele Ah-Kuoi, who launched the mentoring program two months ago.
The critical role of our teachers has been thrust into national conversation during this pandemic but the former high school head of the department of learning, wellbeing and humanities said not all of life’s lessons could be taught in the classroom alone.

“Teachers don’t get nearly enough credit and with their heavy workload there simply isn’t enough time to put emotional intelligence above academic demands,” he said.
“I’ve made it my focus because we all know how important having resilience and emotional intelligence is when tackling the real world.”
Strive Lane offers one-on mentoring, tailored programs and online courses for teenagers and parents.
Mr Mikaele Ah-Kuoi said it was important to include parents in the conversation and work together because, ultimately, they want to see their child succeed.
“Parents often come to me in frustration struggling to get through to their child and connect and I guess that’s where I can have the most impact,” he said.
“Students are drawn to me because I make it my priority to make them feel valued.”
