A TOWNSVILLE high school student who has supported MS Queensland for half her life was diagnosed with the disease on Christmas Eve in a tragic twist of fate.
Year 10 student Aimee Segal woke up with her family on Orpheus Island the morning of Christmas Eve unable to speak after the right side of her body shut down.
After Aimee was flown by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Townsville University Hospital, doctors diagnosed the 15-year-old with multiple sclerosis.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system interfering with nerve impulses with the brain.
Aimee said she thought her “world was ending” when her dad, Brett Segal, told her the news.
“I just screamed in the hospital room and said, ‘No how can this be?’,” she said.
“It’s the irony of it because I did all this fundraising before for MS and I was so for the cause and I loved learning about it.”
Aimee spent 10 days in hospital after her diagnoses undergoing treatment and will require infusion medication every 28 days.
Aimee’s mum, Cora Segal, said the diagnosis had shocked the whole family with younger brother Myles supporting his big sister, painting a welcome home sign for Aimee.
The Townsville Grammar student has entered the MS Swimathon fundraiser every year since she was seven-years-old raising collectively $16,000 for MS Queensland.
In only 24 hours after signing up to the 2021 MS Swimathon to be held on May 8, Aimee has raised $5200 and is the number one fundraiser in Queensland.
