A man has been charged with brandishing a samurai sword at people on a Townsville street.

Police had 'no option' but to fatally shoot man armed with samurai sword in Brisbane

A man has been charged with brandishing a samurai sword at people on a Townsville street.

Police were called to Boyes Court, Heatley, shortly before 1pm on Monday following reports a man was in possession of a samurai sword.

Police arrested the man.

It will be further alleged in court the 53-year-old Heatley man was in possession of cannabis at the time of arrest.

The man was charged with going armed so as to cause fear and possessing dangerous drugs. He is expected to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on October 13.
