A GRANDFATHER who jumped on, threw water over and put his 10-month-old grandson in a headlock because he wouldn’t go to sleep has been jailed.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was looking after his grandson with his wife in late 2018 and early 2019 when the assaults occurred.

The Townsville District Court heard the man struck and slapped his grandson to make him go to sleep, held him around the neck in a headlock and held a blanket over the infant’s face as to suffocate him.

He also sat on the infant’s head, jumped on him, threw cold water over his body and yelled at the small child.

Crown Prosecutor Andrew Walklate said police were called to the home after the man hit the child to make him go to sleep.

The 38-year-old was arrested on June 16, 2019, and was originally charged with torture but the charges were revised. He pleaded guilty to nine counts of common assault against the infant.

Defence Barrister Kelly Stone told the court his client acted out of frustration and had a long history with alcohol abuse and was suffering from a range of medical issues.

“The baby was crying and wouldn’t go to sleep and his frustration got the better of him and he offended,” he said.

Judge Brad Farr said the offending was “utterly disgraceful”.

“You have behaved violently in the past towards women and children almost exclusively, so in another words you are just a bully and a coward,” he said.

“Your frustration level must be very low if you can’t care for a 10-month-old child without resorting to violence.”

Judge Farr took into consideration 295 days served in pre-sentence custody and early plea of guilty. The man was sentenced to two years’ jail to be released from prison on immediate parole.
