The community have rallied around the family of late Townsville fishing identity Marty Price after his death on July 15, fundraising to cover his funeral costs.

A GoFundMe set up to help Marty’s family has received over $14,000 in donations in just six days.

Marty died at age 50 after a seven-month health battle.

He was well-known in the fishing community for his radio and podcast work on the NQ Fishing Show, which he co-hosted alongside Gary Powis.

The GoFundMe fundraiser was organised by Marty’s former workmates at NAPA: Julie Hill and Adam Gablonski.

Julie Hill said Marty’s family were amazed by the amount of people standing by them.

“They are blown away by the amount of people standing by them,” Ms Hill said.

Marty’s wife, Bek, disclosed that her husband had suffered from type 1 diabetes and heart disease, and hoped his passing could raise some awareness for the diseases and men’s health in general.

Marty’s 20-year-old daughter, Billie, said her father “always looked out for the underdogs”.

“He gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. He genuinely had the biggest heart,” she said.

“He was my mum’s soulmate … and my bes tfriend.”

Bek described her father put family first, music second, fishing third, and Liverpool FC fourth in his life.

Ms Hill said she hoped the donations showed the family how much support surrounded them.

“I worked with Marty for seven years, he was an amazing person,” she said.

“This money really helps take the pressure off in terms of funeral costs and trying to get back to normal.”

Several businesses have made huge donations to Marty’s wife and children – including $1100 from NAPA, $1000 from Cheapa Auto Spares, and $1000 from DTS Service Centre.

Marty’s health took a serious turn in December, when he was suddenly hospitalised with two infections – one Strep B and another in his bones which had gone septic – and caught pneumonia as well as he battled to get out of intensive care.

The Townsville fisherman was able to fight it and was out fishing again by March, but in June a heart attack hospitalised him again.

Marty died from complications caused by the heart attack two weeks later.
