An old weatherboard house has been extensively damaged after flames engulfed the building.

The fire on Mystic Ave, Balgal Beach, was the second house fire in Townsville in less than 48 hours after another was gutted by flames in Hermit Park.

Rollingstone Police officer-in-charge Sergeant Tony Jacobs said emergency services were called to the blaze on 60 Mystic Ave about 9.30am on Tuesday.

Firefighters initially held concerns for the occupants but they were later accounted for.

“The tenants weren’t home at the time, the house has been rented since 2008,” Sgt Jacobs said.

Three crews managed to extinguish the fire by 11am.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokesman said the house was well alight by the time firefighters arrived.

Smoke could be seen billowing above the beachside suburb.

“So scary, can see the smoke,” Michelle Leigh said.

The QFES spokesman said gas cylinders were involved but emergency valves prevented any explosions.

The road was blocked off for a short period of time.

No patients required treatment by paramedics.

The fire comes less than 48 hours after a fire gutted a Hermit Park home, which is still being investigated by fire crews and police.

Several crews battled the flames at the Norris St home for about 30 minutes on Sunday night after three people were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms and safely escaped.
