STABLE on the Strand will welcome thousands again this year and another attraction will also have people in a spin.
A 1930s historic carousel has become an icon at the five-day event for the past 10 years.
Owner and operator of the A.J. Cheyne and Sons Catholic Education Carousel Stephen Cheyne said his father stumbled across the carousel down south in a back garden overgrown with weeds.
“The carousel was being built before World War II by a man whose son got killed during the war so he never finished it,” he said.

Mr Cheyne said his dad renovated the carousel and had the horses custom made in Sydney in the 1950s. The carousel will spin 11,000 people over 200 free rides during the event and features 30 horses and two six-seater carriages, which means parents can stand beside their children.
Mr Cheyne has operated the carousel for 45 years and said he loved it.
“It is great looking at the smiles on the kids’ faces when you start the ride off and everyone loves the nostalgia because it can ride all ages,” he said. “We have big lines every night.”
>>Stable on the Strand opened yesterday and will run until Sunday, December 22 from 5.30pm – 9.30pm
