The lights are flashing, bells ringing and points racking up as Townsville is set to host the International Flipper Pinball Association Australian Pinball Championship Series early next year.

It is the first time the championships will be held outside of a capital city and the event will see the top 64 best pinball wizards in the country descend to the city for the intense playoffs to be held at Empire Alternacade.

Venue owner Jason Lynch the February championships would be putting Townsville on the pinball map and said it was Australia’s biggest and premier pinball event.

“Without a doubt, it’ll put us on the map to the wider community,” he said.

“Townsville, thankfully, is already one of the best venues in Australia for pinball.

“We’re getting some of the highest numbers in Australia for our monthly tournaments. So we are already on the map, but this will this will catapult us even further – Townsville was selected as it’s just an up and coming venue.”

Mr Lynch encouraged closet pinball players to come down the Empire Alternacade to play and practice their skills.

“If you want to qualify for these great events, the best way to do it is to come to your local tournament,” he said.

Mr Lynch said the next world pinball champion could be living in the suburbs of Townsville.

“We want to put the feelers out for those pinball wizards out there that don’t know we exist. So if you’re out there, come and give it a go – show us what you got,” he said.

“We have our monthly Monday, pizza and pinball nights. These are the third Monday of every month. It’s only 10 bucks, if you’re a first timer for unlimited pinball and pizza so you can’t go wrong.”

The Australian championships will be held at Empire Alternacade in Flinders Street on February 22-23, 2025.
