SPECIALIST rescue equipment was needed to free an elderly man trapped between a car and a post.

Paramedics and firefighters were alerted to the emergency on Second Ave, Railway Estate about 2.30pm on Christmas Eve.

Firefighters were able to free the man, aged in his late 70s, after about 20 minutes a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was trapped between a car door and a post.

Police told 7 News the man was the driver of the car and early investigations lead them to believe he was checking his mail when the car rolled backwards.

The man tried to stop the car but ended up getting trapped.

The man was taken to Townsville University Hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
