What started as a self-exploration journey for a Townsville author has grown into an Australian-wide movement.
Mother of three Michelle Tyhuis, who is of Torres Strait Islander descent, released her first book, My Deadly Book About Me, in 2019.
It was written to help people with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestry to explore elements of their family history and cultural identity.
From the success of My Deadly Book About Me, Ms Tyhuis recently released the accompanying resource, My Deadly Cultural Support Guide.
It’s designed to provide a personalised toolkit for supporting first nations Australians strengthen their cultural connections.
Ms Tyhuis said the guide took five months to write and was now being used by schools, family support services and child-safety organisations in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.
“It gives me goosebumps to think people are taking the initiative and want to take that step further to provide that cultural support,” she said.
“I am seeing how staff want to learn about cultural awareness and put things up that are subtle in the environment so Indigenous Australians feel comfortable to learn and share their stories.”
