A group of youths in a convoy of five suspected stolen cars unleashed chaos across Townsville overnight, torching one of the vehicles during another busy crime spree.
A photo captured the group swapping cars moments before setting fire to a stolen Kia Sportage in an empty lot along Brodie Street, Hermit Park, around 6am on Monday.
By the time emergency crews arrived to extinguish the blaze, the offenders had already fled the scene.
Police revealed that the Kia Sportage had been stolen from a Humphrey Street residence in West End on Friday, November 8.
The fiery incident came just hours after another stolen car, a silver Honda Jazz, crashed into a light pole on Riechelmann Street, Heatley, on Sunday night.
The Honda Jazz had been reported stolen from a home in Mount Low on November 7.
Meanwhile, residents in Currajong woke to find the grass at Currajong Park torn up once again, with hoons in stolen cars using the park as their personal racetrack over the weekend.
These incidents are part of a wider spree of vehicle thefts in Townsville, with at least seven other vehicles — including cars, motorbikes, and a trailer — reported stolen since Friday.
On November 11, a 2019 grey Mazda CX-9, a white Nissan Dualis, and a 2019 grey Holden Trax were stolen from Currajong, Wulguru, and Hyde Park, respectively.
On November 10, a 2019 black Mazda CX-5 was stolen from Hermit Park, and a 2018 white Mazda BT-50 was stolen from Castle Hill.
On November 9, a 2007 blue Mazda Mazda3 was stolen from Idalia.
On November 8, a silver trailer was stolen from Wulguru, a 2004 blue Kawasaki Z750 J from Kirwan, a 2018 white Kia Sportage from Gulliver, and a 2020 blue Yamaha WR250R from West End.
Investigations are continuing.
