Four fire crews were called to a set of units in Sydney Street, Ayr, at 9am this morning.

The 31-year-old male resident of the home has been arrested for matters not relating to the fire, and is currently in the Ayr watch house.

“I came out because I had to go to work at 9,” the resident said.

“I came out to jump in the car... as soon as I opened the door and started to walk towards the driveway, I saw smoke just coming out of the windows.

“There was just smoke everywhere.”

Fire crews are dampening down the area, with the male resident of the unit speaking with police.

It is not yet known how the fire began.
