Staff working at a Queensland mine which abruptly shut, leaving them without pay and entitlements, have been promised they will soon receive what they are owned.

Consolidated Tin Mines has shut its Mount Garnet and Surveyor Project mines, with a skeleton crew still operating for “care and maintenance”.

The company advised that all other employees would be “stood down without pay”.

Majority shareholder of Consolidated Tin Mines Cyan Stone announced it would pay staff all outstanding wages and entitlements.

It comes as Kirwan man Jason Domin told the Townsville Bulletin he and many other staff he knew had not received payment or superannuation entitlements since last year.

The tin mine owners cited coronavirus as the cause of the mine closures but financial troubles preceded the pandemic by months. Mr Domin said the ASX-listed company made a number of late payments in the past, with Consolidated Tin Mines citing banking error.

In a statement, Sydney-based Cyan Stone said it was “disappointed” a number of mine employees had not been paid as a result of Consolidated Tin Mines’ trading difficulties.

“Cyan Stone has initiated a payment plan through (Consolidated Tin Mines) management and it is expected that all outstanding wages and entitlements will be finalised by mid-May,” it said.

Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper was contacted by a number of people this month who were allegedly owed money by Consolidated Tin Mines.

He raised the issue with Labor Senator Nita Green, who wrote to the company asking for answers.

Mr Harper said the decision by the majority shareholder, Cyan Stone, to pay any outstanding wages and entitlements brought some good news during these challenging times.

“Many of these workers were hit hard after being stood down and it’s especially tough at the moment for people during the coronavirus pandemic,” he said. “To hear Cyan Stone is stepping up to pay people what they’re owed is great news for all.

“I want to thank every worker who bravely spoke out. This is a win for those workers.”
