Townsville has shivered through one of its coldest May morning in more than 60 years, but it’s still well short of the city’s longstanding record for the coldest temperature in May.

Townsville has shivered through one of its coldest May mornings in more than 60 years, but it’s still well short of the city’s longstanding record for the coldest temperature in May.

While the mercury fell to just 13.6 degrees at around 8.30am on Saturday, it was on this same day in 1957 that a recording of just 6.2 degrees was taken at Townsville Airport.

It was however still a freezing start with the morning’s temperature smashing May’s average minimum of 17.7 degrees.

It was also a chilly start in Ayr which recorded just 13.4 degrees and Ingham which fell to 15.2 degrees at 9am.

Meteorologist Rosa Hoff said the cold temperatures are not helped by rainy conditions.

“The cloud will clear off Townsville later tonight so by morning you should be able to see the sun and we should have a sunnier day, but it will still be quite cool,” she said.

“We’ll have fairly fine conditions around the place tomorrow because a big cloud band has been moving from the west towards the east over the state bringing those totals inland.

“Much of that cloud is going to push offshore today because it’s currently moving towards the east and has already cleared Hughenden.”

The average temperature for today is expected to rise due to the bureau taking their mean readings from 9am to 9am.

Ms Hoff said residents can expect to see a top of 22 on Sunday, with a few cooler nights lingering in the week to come.

As of 4pm, 14mm of rain has been recorded at Townsville Aiport.
