Is winter in Australia getting warmer?

Townsville is likely to shiver through its coldest day of the year today as a weather system from the state’s south delivers a chance of frosts as far north as Mackay.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast the mercury to plummet down to 9C, which would make it the coldest day of 2020 to date.

Bureau meteorologist Peter Markworth said a trough moved across Southern Queensland at the weekend which delivered a cool and dry air mass.

This mass will drive temperatures down across North Queensland, with single digit minimum temperatures likely for many parts of North Queensland for the next two days.

“(We) will continue to see cooler mornings to come,” Mr Markworth said. “Frost is expected to reach as far north as inland Mackay.”

There could also be frosts in Mount Isa tomorrow.

To date, the coldest temperature recorded at the Townsville Airport this year was 9.4C on May 25.

If the temperature does drop to 9C at the airport, it will be more than 5C below the June average of 14.7C.
