Late last night Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin announced the region’s disaster management group was being activated.
“The Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) is activating due to Bureau of Meteorology updates regarding the weather system over North Queensland,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“I want to assure residents that they should not panic, however should ensure they have no debris in their yards and emergency kits are well-stocked.
“While rain has been sporadic across our shire, we should be wary of how quickly conditions can change.
“Anyone who does require emergency assistance should call the SES on 132 500. Remember: if it’s flooded, forget it.”
Cr McLaughlin said local Burdekin authorities had been recording the rainfall.
“I want to assure the community that officers are continuing to monitor all weather systems including the low formed by ex-Tropical Cyclone Imogen,” she said.
“While Tropical Cyclone Imogen has weakened to a Tropical Low there is still the potential for destructive winds and heavy rainfall not only in the Burdekin itself but within the catchments of our local waterways.”
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting possible rainfall up to 90mm on Wednesday.
Cr McLaughlin said there was no reason for residents to panic.
