A brolga crashed into a power transformer, knocking out a North Queensland sugar mill for more than half a day.
Wilmar confirmed its Victoria Mill was forced to stop for 13 hours due to the power outage caused by the large waterbird, which is Australia’s largest flying bird with a wingspan of up to 2.5m.
The mill undertook an 11 hour maintenance stop on Tuesday.
Up until that point, close to 204,000 tonnes of cane were crushed for the week.
The season total is now 1.5 million tonnes, putting the Herbert mills more than one third of the way through the 2020 season.
This week recorded the highest level of commercial cane sugar (CCS). The 0.51 improvement saw average weekly CCS eclipse 13 units for the first time this season.
The season to date CCS is still tracking below budget at 1.97 units.
