Bowen farmers amazed by monster 1.2kg mango

Vegetable farmer Michelle O’Regan will be making plenty of daiquiris after stumbling upon a massive mango.

VEGETABLE farmer Michelle O’Regan will be making plenty of daiquiris after stumbling upon a massive mango.

Ms O’Regan said the mango trees on the Stackelroth Farms had been hedged and she was clearing away the branches when she found the mammoth Kensington Pride mango.

“We did have a lot of big fruit in the trees. That’s probably the biggest but we’ve had close to that size,” she said.

“I’m putting off eating because it’s so big. It’s still sitting in the fridge.

“I’ll make mango daiquiris or something.”

Dropped on the scales, the fruit weighed 1196g. The mango was about the size of an adult human’s head.

“They are very old (mango) trees but we cut them right, right back and just kept them hedged since then and it’s brought up the quality of the mangoes,” Ms O’Regan said.

According to the Guinness World Records, the heaviest mango weighed 3.435kg and was presented by Sergio and Maria Bodiongan of the Philippines on August 27, 2009.

The Florida Keitt specimen measured 30.48cm and was harvested from a tree in Mr and Mrs Bodiongan’s front yard.

Ms O’Regan said the Bowen farm mostly grew pumpkins, which were sold locally.

“It hasn’t been too bad a growing year,” she said.

“It’s been a dry winter and a bit cooler as well, but we’d love some rain now to turn some paddocks.”

Stackelroth Farms offers seasonal educational workshops for schoolchildren and community groups.
