A Towsville apprentice who is breaking the mould of a stereotypical fitter and turner is turning heads in the engineering mechanical trade.
Abi Winter found her true calling when she took on the role as an apprentice fitter and turner for the Townsville City Council.
After enrolling in a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade at TAFE in 2017, the 23-year-old has excelled in her job and recently won the Automotive and Engineering Apprentice of the Year award at the TAFE Queensland 2020 Townsville Trade Excellence Awards.
She said the job was the perfect fit for her personality.
“It is jack of all trades and I love that you get a little taste of things like welding, grinding and machining,” she said. “A lot of people will say, ‘why don’t you go into admin?’ but I am not interested. I want to get outside and I want to be hands on.”
According to Job Outlook, only 1 per cent of the fitting and turning workforce is female.
Miss Winter said it was a great career choice for women who were after a diverse role.
“My advice to anyone considering a fitting and turning career is to just do it. Take the leap, because you’ll go out there and love it,” she said.
