A bank branch in Townsville’s biggest shopping centre which was temporarily closed will not be reopening its doors.
The ANZ branch at Stockland Shopping Centre temporarily closed in March.
“Our customers are not using branches like they used to and this has led to a reduction in foot traffic across our national branch network. At the same time demand in our contact centres, which manage hardship and other customer inquiries, has grown dramatically,” ANZ’s district manager for North Queensland Rob Parker said.
“Not reopening this branch is partly because we believe these changes in customer behaviour are here to stay.”

Mr Parker said the majority of customers now preferred to bank online, or using the ANZ app.
Staff from Aitkenvale have been redeployed to other branches or contact centres.
“While there is a clear trend of services in Australia moving online, including Medicare and the Australian Taxation Office, we recognise the transition will be more challenging for some customers,” Mr Parker said.
“Customers who wish to continue face-to-face banking can do so at the Kirwan or Sturt Street branches.”
The bank notified customers of the closure in July.
