Police have released shock details about an incident Townsville in which a man was captured on video attempting to flee pursuing officers by jumping on the back of a moving truck.
In the video, a motorist films a man clinging to the rear of a truck carrying gravel as it travels through a busy intersection in Pimlico on Tuesday morning.
The truck is closely followed by a Queensland Police Service van travelling under lights and sirens.
As the truck and police vehicle travel along what a road in the vicinity of Woolcock Street, a single officer can be seen chasing both vehicles on foot.
The QPS van then appears to attempt to overtake the truck, which appears oblivious to the mayhem behind it, before the video ends.
A QPS spokeswoman confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Townsville officers had arrested a man “following reports of a disturbance at a Townsville shopping centre”.
The shopping centre is understood to be Castletown.
“At around 10.50am the man was reported to be armed with a hammer and acting in a threatening manner near Woolcock Street, Pimlico,” the spokeswoman said.
“When police arrived, he left the scene and jumped on the back of a moving truck travelling along Woolcock Street.”
The spokeswoman said the truck was eventually pulled over on Barryman Street and the man arrested.
