The 'Million Dollar Fish' competition is back!

AUSTRALIA’S richest fishing competition is back in the Top End for its sixth season — this time with extra bite.

As registrations for the NT’s Million Dollar Fish open on Tuesday, NT Major Events has revealed for the first time the chances of nabbing the elusive million dollar barra has increased seven-fold.

There will be seven million dollar barra swimming around the NT’s waterways, though once one is caught, the other six revert to being $10,000 prizes.

In its sixth season, the NT’s Million Dollar Fish is designed to be the perfect lure for tourists during the Territory’s quiet tourism season between October and March.

For the first time, there will also be a new category of tagged fish dubbed the “Double Tag Barra”.

Alastair Lau’s chunky barra was tagged with a Million Dollar Fish BetEasy purple charity tag and released into the Adelaide River, in 2018.

One of these fish will be released in each of the five MDF fishing regions - Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land, Darwin, Kakadu and Katherine - and if caught the fish will be worth $10,000 and an extra $5000 for a mate of the fisho who has “been having a tough time this year”.

Also to be released are 100 red-tagged barra worth $10,000 each and 20 $5000 purple-tagged barra – where the angler wins $2500 and the other $2500 goes to an MDF charity of their choice (Cancer Council NT, Star Ball or the Shimano Junior Indigenous Guide Program through the Hayden & Reynolds Project).

“The Territory is one of Australia’s greatest fishing destinations, and competes easily on the world stage when it comes to incredible fishing experiences,” NT Major Events chief executive Tim Watsford said.

“Best of all, any type of fisho can win. Tagged fish are released all over the Territory, so whether you’re fishing from a boat or land, the bluewater or freshwater, on your own or on a charter, you’re in with a chance.”

Season 6 starts on October 1 and runs until March 31, 2021. You must be registered to claim a prize. Registrations are now open. Register for free at www.milliondollarfish.com.au
