NT Police dog help stop multiple drugs being run into Territory communities

NT Police dogs have helped stop the transportation of kava, tobacco, meth and cannabis as well as thousands of cigarettes into Territory communities. More NT crime news.

NT Police have seized large quantities of illicit substances including meth, cannabis and kava bound for communities across multiple operations.

The Alice Springs Dog Operations Unit with the Kulgera and Yulara police intercepted three cars heading north along the Stuart Highway towards Alice Springs last week.

Drug dogs Yeva and Callen identified commercial quantities of drugs including 43kg of Kava, 25,800 cigarettes, 490 pouches of tobacco and 310 vapes.

One of the occupants of the vehicle had three warrants for prolific domestic violence offences.

The Groote dogs unit in collaboration with Gapiwiak police also pulled in a suspicious vehicle from which they seized 12 ounces of cannabis and $11k in cash.

The DOU stopped a suspicious vehicle and drug dog Rafa searched the vehicle and found 1g of cocaine, 1g of methamphetamines, 5g of cannabis and a gel blaster painted to appear authentic.

In a separate incident Rafa and handler Warfield assisted Strike Force Trident with a search warrant and seized cash, 200g of cannabis and two gel blaster firearms.

Senior Sergeant Meacham King said the police force’s commitment to combatting illegal substances entering communities was unwavering.

“We know the detrimental impacts illicit drugs have on our communities, so we will continue to work in lockstep with local police to disrupt the flow on to our streets,” he said.

“If you bring illicit substance into the Territory the Dog Operations Unit will be working closely with all units of the NT Police and other agencies to identify you, seize everything involved in criminal activity and put you before the courts.”

Man hospitalised after alleged weapon attack in Darwin suburbs

June 6, 11.30am: A man has been taken to hospital after he was allegedly attacked with an edged weapon in Darwin.

Around 9.30pm on Wednesday, police received reports of a woman allegedly assaulting a man with an edged weapon to the head on Binet Ct, Malak.

Police allege the man then armed himself with an unspecified weapon and attempted to assault the woman, who fled on foot.

St John Ambulance attended the scene and conveyed the victim to hospital.

It is believed the man and woman are known to each other.

The alleged offender has since been located and remains in police custody.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact 131 444.

Weapon-wielding youths allegedly target hospo businesses in CBD

June 6: Two boys, one armed with an edged weapon, have stolen a restaurant employee’s bag before assaulting a guard at a separate cafe, police allege.

Northern Territory Police are calling for information after the alleged aggravated robbery in Darwin City on Tuesday afternoon.

At 4.40pm, emergency services received reports that two boys had allegedly stolen a bag from a worker at a restaurant in the Vic Arcade at Smith St Mall.

A short time later the youths went to a cafe on Cavenagh St, where a security guard confronted them as they allegedly attempted to steal from the store.

The boys allegedly threatened the guard with the edged weapon, before assaulting the guard and fleeing the scene.

Detectives from Strike Force Trident are investigating, and urge anyone who witnessed the incident to make contact on 131 444.

Brand new car stolen in Top End burglary

June 6, 7:50am: A Katherine man’s brand new car has been stolen after two thieves broke into his home.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankin said the man called cops about 1.31am Thursday when the two unknown offenders forced their way into his Bergman Cct home.

Sergeant Rankin said the thieves threatened the man, stole a set of car keys, and fled the scene in the man’s 2024 Toyota Camry.

He said the car had been fitted with a tracker and was located and retrieved quickly.

Sergeant Rankin said the two thieves were still on the run as of 6am.

He could not confirm the age or gender of the offenders.

Following an unrelated incident three weeks ago, Sergeant Rankin said a single stolen firearm had been recovered overnight.

The weapon – which appeared to be an old handgun – was allegedly stolen from the Darwin Military Museum on May 11, as well as another firearm.

Sergeant Rankin on Thursday said the second weapon – as well as the two men who stole them, according to CCTV footage – were still outstanding.

June 6, 7:50am: Police continue to investigate a Katherine business break-in after thieves stole a car and rammed the property gates.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankin said the Third St business was targeted about 9.21pm Tuesday.

He said “a number” of thieves broke into the business and stole a set of car keys.

Sergeant Rankin said the thieves then used a 2003 Toyota Corolla owned by the business to ram the front gates and make their escape.

He said police were reviewing CCTV footage, which showed the car being driven recklessly some time after the burglary.

Sergeant Rankin said the offenders were still outstanding as of 6am Thursday and investigations continued.
