Darwin crime: Man arrested after alleged DV assault in Palmerston

A man has been arrested after he was allegedly caught driving around Palmerston with a gun just a day after being involved in a domestic violence assault. Read the latest.

January 24, 3pm: NT Police have arrested a 30-year-old man after he was allegedly involved in a domestic violence assault and had a firearm while driving around the Palmerston area.

Police found the man was allegedly driving through Palmerston with a firearm in his possession about 10am on Thursday.

Territory Safety Division members went to the man’s home on Tarakan Court, where they established a cordon.

The man was arrested and officers allegedly found and seized a quantity of illicit substances while searching his unit.

Police also searched his vehicle allegedly finding a firearm and ammunition, which were also seized.

It came a day after the man was allegedly involved in a domestic violence assault.

The firearm was not used during either incident.

The alleged offender remains in police custody with charges expected to follow as investigations continue.

Man stabbed in Palmerston in possible DV attack

January 23, 12.50pm: A man is in hospital after being stabbed in the chest during an altercation in Palmerston overnight.

At about 10.20pm on Wednesday, police received reports of a possible domestic violence disturbance at a unit complex on Victoria Drive, Gray.

It was reported a man was engaged in an argument with multiple other people.

Arriving at the scene, police found a 45-year-old man who had been stabbed in the chest.

St John Ambulance took the victim to Royal Darwin Hospital to be treated for his non-life threatening injuries.

A 52-year-old woman, suspected to have assaulted the man, was arrested and remains in police custody.

Strikeforce Lyra is conducting enquiries into the matter and the investigation remains ongoing.

Man strips in protracted police chase at Top End golf course

January 20, 4.06pm: A man who led police on a car and foot chase through Palmerston and onto a local golf course over alleged domestic violence offences was found shirtless and hiding in a tree.

About 11am, the 34-year-old man, who police allege had an outstanding arrest warrant for DV offences, fled from Casuarina police in a car when they approached.

The man was able to lose police during a short pursuit.

He was spotted driving in Durack shortly after by officers in Palmerston, and a second chase began.

The vehicle’s tyres were spiked on University Ave and the man once again fled from cops, this time into the grounds of the Palmerston Golf Course.

The chase sparked the response of multiple police units and a cordon had to be set up in the area, NT Police said.

The man stripped of his shirt and then a “second item of clothing” on the fence of a nearby residence.

Police dog Drax sniffed out the man and found him hiding in a tree.

The man surrendered and was arrested.

As at Monday afternoon, police said charges were expected to be laid.

Three men found after Nhulunbuy jail break

Update - January 20, 1.14pm: Three men have been arrested after allegedly escaping custody in Nhulunbuy on the weekend.

It was alleged two men, aged 30, had escaped from Datjala Work Camp on Bottlebrush Ave after 9pm on Saturday.

The next day, about 8.45am, a 34-year-old third prisoner was reported to have also escaped about the same time as the first pair.

NT Police on Monday said they had found the three men in Yirrkala.

All are now back in custody.

January 19, 2pm: Northern Territory Police are calling for information in relation to three men who escaped from custody in Nhulunbuy.

At 10.40pm on Saturday, NT Corrections reported to police that two 30-year-olds had escaped from the Datjala Work Camp facility on Bottlebrush Ave sometime after 9pm.

About 8.45am on Sunday, Corrections reported to police that a third prisoner, aged 34, had also escaped the facility between 9pm and 11pm on Saturday.

Additional police resources have been deployed to the area, and investigations are ongoing.

While police do not believe the individuals pose a risk to the general public, members of the community are advised not to approach them.

According to the government website, Datjala Work Camp accommodates up to 50 open-security male prisoners who have been sentenced or are on remand.

No sex offenders or prisoners of public interest are considered for placement.
