A POLICE officer injured in a “violent” assault may need surgery to fix his broken nose.

An alleged offender lashed out at the male police officer during an arrest in Annandale about 2.20am yesterday at a “large street gathering”.

Townsville police district duty officer Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said the behaviour was abhorrent.

“After being arrested the 18 year old male offender has tried to escape and run away,” he said.

“While being detained he has violently assaulted the officer who restrained him and has broken his nose.

“The 18 year old male has been charged with serious assault and has been remanded in custody to front court tomorrow and I wish my officer a speedy recovery.”
