A blooming good Townsville business is about to sprout up as a florist cafe at a second location, realising its owner’s long-held ambition of combining the “beautiful duo” of coffee and flowers.
A former-construction worker with a lifelong passion for flowers, Natalie Burns began working from home as a florist in 2020 before co-founding florist business The Bloom Room Townsville at Idalia’s Otto’s Market Precinct in July 2021.
Over the years, the business has built a loyal following for its unique arrangements, daily flower menu, flower stem bar (where customers pick their own blooms), dried flowers, hampers, gifts, flower workshops, and specialised support for events like weddings.
Riding a wave of business success, Ms Burns plans to open a second The Bloom Room Townsville store on Monday.
It will operate as a florist cafe at 39 Ingham Rd, West End, right next to the future Weststate Private Hospital.
She drew inspiration from seeing how well coffee and flowers combined together at a Melbourne florist cafe.
“I’ve always wanted to do a cafe florist, it was always the dream, but I just couldn’t find the right spot and then this spot came up next to the hospital … I thought it would be a really good opportunity,” Ms Burns said.
“We do everyday flowers, but we also do weddings and events such as workshops (teaching) flower crowns, flower bouquets, flower arrangements, and dried floral.
“We also do hampers and custom hampers … we do a huge range of them … that’s the next thing I’m launching onto the website.”
She hoped to capitalise on the hospital’s inherent demand for flowers, along with the incoming medical workforce’s desire for a decent cup of coffee and their selection of grab-and-go foods.
Employing five staff, the new business will have a strong focus on supporting local and regional suppliers for its selection of florist chocolates, handmades candles, body soaps, bath bombs, oils, fragrances, lip balms, and beauty products.
To make the most of their larger space, which was ideal for special occasions like business team building events, Hens nights, Christmas and birthday parties, she planned to kick off a series of workshops which featured local artists.
“We’ve got an artist who does floral art, where you paint the flowers and I’ve got a few other ones that I’m talking with at the moment,” she said.
