A cold change is looming over Tasmania, as winds and showers are expected to hit the state for the first day of October.

The sign of rain is a welcomed sight, amid a strengthening El Nino in the coming months but Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Mark Anolak said there won’t be as much rain as we’d like.

“We are starting to see some showers moving across the North West and those showers are probably likely to hover around the Western parts of the state pretty much all day Sunday,” he said.

“We might see them extend a little bit further east over Hobart for a period during the day Sunday, but not a huge amount of rain is expected.”

The Bom has issued a gale warning for the Central North Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, East of Flinders Island, Lower East Coast, South East Coast and South West Coast on Sunday. There is a strong wind warning for areas including Derwent Estuary Norfolk Bay, Storm Bay Channel, Upper East Coast and Central West Coast.

“We’re looking at strong north-westerly winds, maybe the showers extending a little bit over land during the day tomorrow, but then contracting back to the west during the afternoon or during the evening,” Mr Anolak said.

“Spring is a notorious time for lots of cool changes all at once. We are seeing a series of cold fronts coming across over the next week or so.

“There will be another southerly change coming through midweek and that will bring cooler conditions.”
