Part of Primrose Sands remains closed while the reason for repeated incidences of high bacteria levels is investigated.

On Wednesday, the Sorell council posted to its website that swimming is not recommended at the western end of the beach, near the boat ramp due to high results from routine water sampling.

A council spokeswoman confirmed the investigation remained ongoing and advice remained the same, with swimming not recommended at the Western end of the beach.

The eastern end, below the Primrose Sands General Store is still suitable for swimming, and bacteria levels will continue to be monitored throughout the summer season.

“The sample site at the western end of the beach (the Boat Ramp end) is subject to seepage and stormwater,” the website states.

“However, the reason for the high results has not yet been established and is currently under investigation.”

The Water Quality Advisory Sign at the boat ramp beach entrance reflects the current situation and for more information please call Sorell council on 6269 0000.

Up North, the beach on Burnie’s waterfront, West Beach West, is closed to swimmers after routine water sampling showed elevated bacteria levels.

“At this stage, the source of the elevated bacteria levels remains unclear. Council officers are actively investigating potential sources of contamination,” Acting mayor Giovanna Simpson said.
She said while the beach remained open it was recommended that swimming be avoided until further notice.

Further water sampling is expected to occur next week and if water quality complies with public health guidelines, advice and signage would be updated according to Ms Simpson.
