A 40 unit social housing development north of Hobart has been the target of ongoing vandalism attacks, with the cost of the damages rising to more than $100k.

The Centacare Evolve housing development on Fisher Drive at Herdsmans Cove has been the subject of multiple instances of vandalism in the past months.

The vandalism included a “significant number of broken windows” and attempted arson attacks, CEO of Centacare Evolve Ben Wilson, told the Mercury.

Tasmania Police said they were continuing to investigate several instances of damage at the site, after about 34 properties had their windows smashed in.

“... [Police will] continue to engage with the Brighton Council and other stakeholders about the matter.

“This sort of criminal behaviour won’t be tolerated.

“Bridgewater police would like to hear from anyone who can help investigators identify those responsible,” a police spokeswoman said.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crimestoppers at crimestopperstas.com.au and quote OR710697.”

Police were also investigating a structure fire on Fisher Drive that happened on April 10.

Mr Wilson said that the vandalism had caused “significant cost implications” to the tune of more than $100k, and delays of approximately three months to the construction program.

“We have been liaising with Tas Police who have been assisting, I would also note that the community have been very supportive of seeing this issue stop,” Mr Wilson said.

CEO of Homes Tasmania Eleri Morgan-Thomas said incidents that impacted the completion of social housing meant people were not getting into homes as quickly as they should.

“Disappointingly, we are now also seeing wanton acts of vandalism delay the delivery of homes,” Ms Morgan-Thomas said.

“Centacare Evolve Housing has advised the vandalism at Fisher Drive has also resulted in significant extra costs through repairs and increased security.”
