Man found unconscious with serious injuries in New Town

Update 4pm: Police have confirmed a man who was found critically injured in New Town in the early hours of Friday morning has since died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

The investigation into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, officers say.

9am Saturday: A man remains in critical conditions at hospital after sustaining injuries in New Town on Friday.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the circumstances of how the man sustained critical injuries.

Officers said the man he was pictured with on CCTV at the Kmart Plaza had been located and interview by police. They said he was no longer considered a person of interest.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Update 9pm Friday:

A four-wheel-drive vehicle has been seized and two men are assisting police with inquiries as the investigation continues into how a man sustained critical injuries in New Town on Friday morning.

About 2.50am on Friday, a man aged in his 50s was located unconscious on Swanston St with significant injuries to his torso and neck area.

Detective Inspector David Gill said the man underwent surgery on Friday at Royal Hobart Hospital and remains in a critical condition.

“Throughout today, detectives have undertaken numerous inquiries including extensive door knocking and collection of CCTV, to determine the movements of the man early this morning and how he sustained his injuries,” Detective Inspector Gill said.

“At this stage, police believe the man was on the roadway of Swanston Street when he was struck by a 4WD vehicle.”

“Late this afternoon police seized the 4WD vehicle believed to have been involved. The vehicle will now be forensically examined.”

“Two people who were allegedly in the vehicle at the time it was on Swanston Street this morning are assisting police with their inquiries.”

“The police investigation is ongoing, and I ask anyone with information to come forward.”

Earlier today: Police renew calls for information as the man found with “grave, life-threatening” injuries in New Town early Friday morning remains in a critical condition in hospital following emergency surgery.

Tasmania Police detective inspector David Gill said the man, aged in his 50s and a resident of Pyrie street, Newtown, was found with serious injuries to his neck and torso on Swanston Street at around 2.45am Friday.

He remained in a critical condition in hospital on Friday afternoon, and police said his condition meant police had been unable to speak with him.

“We renew our call for any members of the public that may have actually seen anything suspicious or heard of anything that took place in the early hours this morning,” detective Gill said.

Detective Gill said police were keeping an open mind during investigations into how the man was injured, but said the man was found on the road.

“We’re keeping an open-mind and investigating a number of possibilities including the fact he may have been the victim of a serious assault or in fact been run over by a motor vehicle,” he said.

He said extensive doorknocking and interviewing in New Town this morning along with local CCTV footage had allowed police to establish a timeline of events up until around 2am.

The man spent most of yesterday evening at his home in Pirie Street, New Town, and was later observed at the Kmart New Town complex with another man at around 12.30am.

This man has yet to be spoken to by police.

The man was then seen again on CCTV walking up and then back down Swanston Street at around 2am.

Earlier: Mystery surrounds how a man came to be seriously injured in New Town, after he was found unconscious in the early hours of this morning.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was found on Swanston Street about 2.50am, with serious injuries to his torso and neck.

He was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

“A police investigation is ongoing to determine how the man sustained his injuries,” Tasmania Police detective inspector David Gill said.

“At this stage police are investigating a number of possibilities including the man being the victim of an assault or struck by a vehicle.

“If anyone has any information in relation to how the man was injured, or suspicious activities in the area around the time, I ask them to come forward.”

Swanston Street was closed off to the public this morning but has now reopened.

Information can be provided anonymously to Tasmania Police on 131 444.

Police officer stood down, charged with strangulation

A Tasmanian police office has been stood down, after he was charged with family violence offences, including strangulation.

The man will appear in court today over the alleged family violence incident.

“As is the usual process, he will be stood down from duty,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

“It is not appropriate to comment further at this stage.”

Fire crews move to extinguish Sandy Bay blaze

September 5: Emergency crews have moved quickly to douse a hedge fire between two homes in Sandy Bay.

Tasmania Police and the TFS attended the Mawhera Ave blaze which is believed to have started in a shed about 12.30pm.

Red Chapel Ave between Red Knights Rd and Sandy Bay Rd was closed to all traffic during the blaze.

Mawhera Ave was expected to be closed until about 3pm while Tasmania Fire Service attended the scene.

Teens accused of sharing Snapchat video without consent

Three youths have been charged by Tasmania Police after sharing a Snapchat video of a 15-year-old girl without her knowledge or consent.

A 14-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy and a 13 year old girl were proceeded against by detectives from the Northern Family and Sex Crimes Command on Thursday under the Youth Justice Act.

Police are continuing investigations into the video’s distribution, but are urging families to monitor their children’s online behaviour and safety.

Driver hurt in truck crash

September 5 11.30am: Police remain at the scene of a truck crash on the Bass Highway at Sassafras.

The driver of the truck has been taken to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries.

The entire northbound lane remains blocked and traffic detours in place along Cutting Road.

One south-bound lane is blocked.

Police said motorists would continue to encounter delays in this section of the Bass Highway for some time.

Earlier: Police and emergency services remain at the scene of a truck crash on the Bass Highway at Sassafras.

The driver of the truck has received serious injuries.

The entire North bound lane is blocked, a traffic diversion is in place along Cutting Road.

One South bound lane is blocked.

Motorists will encounter delays in this section of the Bass Highway for some time.
