Federal member for the North-West Tasmanian seat of Braddon, Gavin Pearce, has confirmed he will not run at the next national election, with the Liberal Party thanking him for his ”exemplary service” to the state.
Mr Pearce told the Mercury that the decision to not seek preselection was not one he had taken lightly, and said the Liberal Party remained in a strong position to retain the seat.
”I will work night and day to make sure that that happens,” Mr Pearce said on Tuesday.
Tasmanian Liberal Party President Michael McKenna said Mr Pearce had been a champion for Braddon for the past five years, describing the parliamentarian’s decision as understandable given the fact he had a young family.
“Our regions need strong and passionate representatives to speak up for them in Canberra, and that’s what Gavin has done time and time again,” Mr McKenna said.
“There are countless projects and investments across Braddon that are the result of Gavin’s advocacy for his community.”
Mr McKenna said the Liberal Party would re-open nominations for Braddon, as the internal pre-selection processes continued.
The next federal election is due before 27 September, 2025
