Woman charged with alleged wounding

A man in his late 20s has been hospitalised after suffering serious injuries in an alleged wounding incident in the state’s northwest.

Tasmania Police have charged a 23-year-old woman with assault and wounding after police were called to a Devonport residence on Friday.

The 29-year-old man sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

He remained at the North West Regional Hospital in a stable condition on Saturday.

The woman was detained to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court at a date not provided by police.

Pair’s ‘outright dangerous’ 170km/h highway speed

December 9: A pair of drivers caught speeding at breakneck speeds on a Tasmanian highway have been slapped with huge fines and will be off the road for months.

Tasmania Police, who were riding motorcycles apprehended the pair on Friday, December 8 at 4.20pm on the Bass Highway at Westbury.

A black Ford Falcon, driven by a P-plater was first spotted driving at 170km/h.

The Falcon was closely followed by a white Toyota HiLux.

Both vehicles were clamped for 28 days, with the drivers fined $1100 each and have lost their licences for at least four months.

Incredibly, Tasmania Police officers spotted two more vehicles – this time on the back of Suzuki motorcycles – passed them by at similar speeds.

Senior Constable Rockliff said such excessive speeds, while on a major highway at peak hour, was “outright dangerous” to all road users, and “could very easily result in a fatal crash”.

“In the lead up to Christmas and into the new year, police will be focusing on such high-risk driving, anywhere, anytime,” he said.

“Members of the community are encouraged to report dangerous driving at the time, by calling 131 444; and those with footage can upload their videos for follow-up by police via the link on the Tasmania Police website.”

Police are seeking the identity of the two Suzuki motorcycle riders, are asked to contact police with information.

Woman charged with sexual abuse of a child

December 8, 3:18pm

Police have charged a 45 year old woman with sexual abuse after the alleged abuse of a teenager when he was aged between 14 and 17.

The Bridgewater woman faces two counts of sexual abuse of a child or young person and is set to appear in court next month.

Detectives say the charges come after a ‘significant’ investigation.

Fire tears through general store on Tasman Highway

Update: A fire has ripped through a general store in the state’s north, with fireys on the scene now investigating the cause of the blaze.

TFS crews from Launceston and Rocherlea were called to the scene of the structure fire at the Nunamara Store on Wednesday afternoon.

“The fire has been extinguished and crews will be in attendance for some time making the scene safe and completing a fire investigation,” a TFS spokesperson said.

Earlier, Tasmania Police cautioned motorists who were driving in the area that one lane of the Tasman Highway had been closed.

“Motorists are asked to slow down and drive with caution,” a police spokesperson said.

Crash between truck, two cars slows highway traffic

Update: The Midlands Highway at Bridgewater is now clear from the earlier crash. No serious injuries were reported.

November 5: A truck and two cars have crashed on the Midland Highway at Bridgewater, with police urging motorists to drive with caution.

Police are currently on the scene after the incident, which happened on the highway heading south on Tuesday morning.

“Motorists are asked to slow down and drive with caution in the area until the scene is cleared,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.

No serious injuries have been reported, according to police.

Woman nabbed for alleged high range drink driving

November 5: A middle-aged Risdon Vale woman has been hit with a two-year disqualification after allegedly being caught driving more than four times the limit.

The 43-year-old was intercepted on South Arm on Monday at about 5.30pm in her white Toyota Prado, which had a smashed windscreen, according to police.

Police took her into custody where she later returned a breath alcohol reading of .236 – more than four times the legal limit.

Acting Sergeant Mcvilly of Bellerive Police said officers’ message to drivers was clear: do not drink and drive.

“We’re always on the roads, and you will get caught,” Acting Sergeant Mcvilly said.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, police thanked the members of the public who assisted their efforts.

Those with information or who witnessed the incident, including dashcam footage of the vehicle in the area at that time on Monday, are urged to speak to police if they have not already done so.

House ‘fully involved in fire’ as crews rush to Bridgewater

Updated, November 4, 4.30pm: Tasmania Police says it has commenced an investigation into a house fire at Bridgewater after Tasmania Fire Service investigators determined it had been deliberately lit.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Scott Road about 12.40pm Monday.

“While firefighters responded quickly and prevented the fire from spreading, the residence was significantly damaged,” police said in a statement.

A 17-year-old, the only occupant at the time, was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

November 4, 1.30pm: Tasmania Fire Service crews are responding to a house at Bridgewater that is “fully involved in fire”.

According to a brief TasALERT notice issued at 1.05pm, crews from Bridgewater and Glenorchy are currently in attendance at a structure fire at Scott Rd, Bridgewater.

“Crews arrived to find the house fully involved in fire,” the alert read.

“More information will be provided when available.”
