Sorell has been chosen as one of 10 new university hubs across Australia aimed at making is easier for people to get a tertiary education closer to home.

Data shows that almost one in two young people aged in their 20s and 30s have a university degree in Australia but in the Sorell area it is just under 25 per cent.

It is believed the Sorell hub, to be announced on Saturday, will be co-located with the Sorell Jobs Hub, a federal and state government funded building currently under construction in Cole St, Sorell.

Federal Labor member for Lyons Brian Mitchell has hailed the new university hub.

“A study hub in Sorell will make a huge difference to students, offering an opportunity to learn closer to home,” he said.

“The Albanese Labor Government continue to rebuild and support our regions, offering the same opportunities to people there as people that live closer to Hobart.”

Education Minister Jason Clare said it was clear university study hubs attracted more people to tertiary study.

“Almost one in two young people in their 20s and their 30s have a university degree today,” he said.

“But not everywhere. Not in the outer suburbs and not in regional Australia.

“That’s why we are doubling the number of University Study Hubs, to bring university closer to people in our outer suburbs and regions.

“We know they work. The evidence is they increase the number of people going to uni and finishing a uni degree.”

Study Hubs provide student support and campus-style facilities for students who are studying a university or TAFE course without having to leave their community.

The Sorell hub is one of 10 new suburban university study hubs being announced with more on the way.

The 2021 Census data showed that Sorell was lagging in terms of population with higher education.

In Sorell-Dodges Ferry, only 17.4 per cent of the population had higher education qualifications, compared to the national average of 29.2 per cent.

The participation rate in higher education in Sorell-Dodges Ferry was 4.6 per cent, which is below the national average of 6.7 per cent.

Suburban university study hubs were recommended by the Universities Accord to try to help more people from the outer suburbs get the opportunity to have a tertiary education.

The federal government expects the new hubs to be up and running by mid-2025.

It says the 10 locations were chosen following a competitive application process.

A further round for four additional Suburban University Study Hubs opens on Monday.

The government is investing $66.9m to establish 20 more Regional University Study Hubs, and 14 new Suburban University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs of major cities.
