A southern Tasmanian bus driver was allegedly assaulted by two youths at Claremont on Thursday night, police confirmed.

A Metro spokesperson said they were working with police on the matter.

Police said the incident occurred about 6.45pm and no one was physically injured.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.

The Tasmanian Rail Tram and Bus Union spokesperson believed a knife was allegedly used during the incident.

They also confirmed the female driver was doing well.

Police also confirmed a separate incident occurred on the Midland Highway on the same night.

Officers said they were investigating a report where a small amount of coins was allegedly taken from a bus driver.

Police were unable to confirm the suburb or bus route where this occurred.

No one was physically injured, police said.

Following the incidents, the union doubled down on its push for protective screens and transit officers.

“As things stand, drivers are completely unprotected,” the spokesperson said.

Metro Tasmania said they had commenced the tender process for the screens.

“While we understand the frustrations with the delay in implementation, it has been critical that Metro ensures no unintended safety risks are created by the screens.”
