Whether looking for a carnival, a seven-course degustation dining experience, market stalls or the glitziest party scene, Tasmania has a taste of everything for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Starting in Hobart, New Year’s Eve revellers can get the best of both world’s all in one place at Hobart’s waterfront.

At PW1, the Taste of Summer will run two times: a family-friendly afternoon session with free entry until 4pm, an evening session from 6pm till 1.30am with prime view of the fireworks and an added soundtrack of music by Noiseworks frontman Jon Stevens.

Nearby, Franklin Wharf Restaurant and Bar is hosting a NYE Deck party, full of all the glitz, glamour and finer things in life you would want on New Year’s Eve.

Venue manager Laura Curtain said the restaurant’s first New Year’s Eve party would be a night celebrating everything Tasmanian.

“Not only will we have prime viewing of the Hobart fireworks, we’ll have the best produce at our grazing stations and roaming canapes, the best live and local performers and the best Tassie beverages – including a Jansz cart,” she said.

There will also be plenty of easy travel around Hobart’s waterfront, as the Hobart City Council focus on making this year’s NYE as “welcoming and accessible” as possible.

“With all the people expected to pour into the city, we have made some upgrades from last year to ensure the waterfront is family friendly, accessible and fun for everyone,” Hobart Lord mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“For the first time we will be closing the roads around the waterfront to vehicles and making it a bigger, safer pedestrian zone. We have also increased the number of services and amenities in the area such as public toilets, bins, security and safety angels.”

Part of these amenities includes the relocated taxi rank on Salamanca Place besides Parliament lawns and a designated drop-off/pick-up area on Elizabeth Str (between Morrison and Davey Street).

Safety angels in bright vests will help to direct and guide visitors around the waterfront and to the various hotspots in the city, Ms Reynolds calling them a “dedicated army”.

Free parking is available at the Regatta Grounds all night, as well as opening hours extended at the Argyle St and Salamanca car parks.

Metro will be operating additional Nightrider buses from 6pm, with a fare setting you back just $2.

Fireworks will be a big focus at the waterfront this year, Hobart City Council celebrating 25 years of fireworks with its two, 10-minute displays at 9.30pm and midnight.

“The waterfront of Hobart has the traditionally been the place to flock to,” Ms Reynolds said.

“Council has done a lot of work to have more space for people, more places to gather and it will be a better New Year’s Eve celebration for it.”

A firework spectacular of a different kind will take off in the north of the state when drones take over the sky in Burnie.

SeaFM and Burnie City Council’s Fire on the Foreshore NYE party will feature a drone lights show at 9.30pm and 12am above West Beach in an attempt by council to make New Year’s Eve celebrations “eco-friendly, quiet for both humans and pets and free from air pollution”.

“The use of drones ensures a quieter celebration, making it more enjoyable for residents, visitors and their furry companions,” a council spokesman said.

Party-goers will also be able to take in live music, food and drinks, carnival rides and the big Burnie bonfire in between drone shows.

Back down south, Mona is bringing the party vibes with a “big New Year’s bash” on its lawns from 6pm on Sunday.

The party will have a distinctly Tasmanian-flair this year not just from the view down the Derwent River – boasting an all-local artist line-up of all genres.

“Our partnership with Music TAS on New Year’s Eve exemplifies our mutual commitment to fostering all styles of original Tasmanian contemporary music, ranging from hip-hop, to punk, to things that are better off unlabelled and undescribed,” Mona’s artistic director Brian Ritchie said.

While busy booking tickets or planning for the many events on offer around the state, Tasmania Police are also urging the public to plan ahead for travel to and between New Year’s celebrations.

“Whether you are celebrating in the entertainment precincts, at a friend’s house, or while camping or visiting the shack, we want everyone to bring in 2024 safely,” Tasmania Police Inspector John Toohey said.

“It’s a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the year ahead, and we don’t want to discourage anyone from celebrating – but we do want to encourage people to be safe and considerate of others.”

Police will be out in force across the state on New Year’s Eve, targeting anti-social behaviour, violence and drink and drug driving, including a field of officers monitoring Tasmania’s roads as part of Operation Safe Arrival.

“We’ll have patrols on our highways and main roads, and we’ll be covering other routes, back streets, and rural areas,” Inspector Toohey said.

“Don’t start 2024 with a mistake you’ll live to regret.”
