Move over Aus Day, change the date call for Queen’s Birthday for Tassie royalty – Princess Mary

Calls are being made to ‘change the date’, but not for Australia Day. A new public holiday is being mooted to honour our Aussie royal: Princess Mary.

A group of royal family fans have called for Tasmania to mark its own Queen’s Birthday holiday – but this time, in recognition of Princess Mary’s special day.

In anticipation of the Tasmanian-born Princess’s upcoming proclamation – where she will be crowned Her Majesty Queen Mary of Denmark – a group on Facebook has formed to push for the new holiday.

The online group has already attracted nearly 200 members, suggesting February 5 for the holiday to mark Princess Mary’s birthday.

Rather than taking a day off solely for the British royal family, the group has suggested it is more fitting for Tasmania to honour the state’s only royal.

In the description of the Facebook group, admin Andrew Burne insisted that it was “time to change the date and focus”.

“King, then Queen, now King, all share the same date for us all to have a holiday on the second weekend of June,” Mr Burne said.

“Queensland moved their date of celebration, I think Tasmania needs to do the same.”

One woman commented she and her family were even learning Danish in honour of the soon-to-be-Queen, signing off with a triumphant “long live Queen Mary”.

In addition to the suggested holiday, the Facebook group has encouraged all Tasmanians to deck out the state in gold to commemorate the newly crowned Queen.

From painting garden furniture to adding a touch of gold to outfits, the group of fans have urged everyone to display their support for the first ever Tasmanian royal.
