After major delays the Kingborough Council is aiming to have the Summerleas Road open by the middle of December.
The road has been closed for 100 days longer than expected while the council constructs an
underpass under the busy road to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The council originally said the road would be closed for 10 weeks and open by August 30 however “unforeseen delays” extended the project’s timeline significantly.
A council spokeswoman said they were working to get the road open by mid December, however the project would continue into the new year while the ramps are finalised.
Wet weather could impact the timeline further.
The council spokeswoman said the road would open with a temporary seal and would be sealed permanently in the new year.
The council has faced significant backlash over the delays and posts relating to the project are turned off.
In an update on November 21 the council said concrete pours had been taking place for backfilling the culverts and the retaining wall footings for the Southern side of the road had been prepared.
Installation of the mass block retaining wall was set to commence next week.
A “thorough review” of the project will be undertaken by the council’s CEO.
