Disgraced Tasmanian judge Gregory Geason has officially quit his Supreme Court role, the state government has confirmed, days after he was sentenced for domestic violence offences. Attorney-General Guy Barnett on Monday confirmed the judge’s decision, which he foreshadowed during sentencing submissions made by his lawyers last week in the Hobart Magistrates Court.
“The Government has received confirmation that Justice Gregory Geason has tendered his resignation as a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania with immediate effect,” Mr Barnett said.
Justice Geason was sentenced to 100 hours community service for assault and emotional abuse that a magistrate has described as having a “profound effect” on the female victim.
Justice Geason’s sentence forms part of a 12-month community service order, with the court also recording convictions for both offences.
During a seven-day hearing in July, the woman gave evidence that she suffered concussion and significant bruising from the assault that occurred inside a Battery Point residence on 31 October last year.
