Planning begins three months out from the annual Book Week for St Mary’s College librarian Mary-Louise Jones.
Ms Jones has become a wizard at creating fantastical displays at the school’s library to celebrate Book Week, purely to encourage younger minds to pick up a book.
“I spend a few months networking with the library team when the Book Week theme is announced, getting supplies and getting other school staff to help me pull this all together,” she said.
“When I heard the Book Week theme was ‘Reading is Magic’, I thought ‘woo-hoo, I finally get to do some amazing things!’.”
Ms Jones is decked out for the entire week in an elaborate Dumbledore costume – the wizard headmaster in the Harry Potter books – as well as inviting students through her winter wonderland display of Narnia-meets-Harry Potter.
Students can even walk through a mythical wardrobe, just like the children’s book, with the entire display taking about three days to set up.
Ms Jones said the effort is all worth it to see students passionate and engaged with reading.
“We have local authors coming in to inspire students to not only want to read, but write as well,” she said.
“We have our senior students coming down to the library to help primary students in our Drop Everything and Read event and there are plenty of competitions and prizes that bring students in.
“My hope is that it fosters that love for reading and it continues long past Book Week.”
Book Week runs until Friday.
