A Hobart-based “ambient dream-pop” duo inspired by the majesty of the natural world are making waves overseas, recently completing their second tour of the UK and Europe and signing to a globally renowned record label to release their fourth album.
Husband and wife Cooper Bowman and Amelia Besseny have been making music as Troth since 2019 and are attracting interest from international audiences.
The pair, originally from NSW, even earned a coveted guest mix slot on tastemaking London radio station NTS earlier this year and have signed to Glasgow label Night School.
Bowman described Troth’s music as “ambient dream-pop” and said he and Besseny were “hugely influenced by our environment in Lutruwita/Tasmania but also by the local and global music and art communities that we are connected to”.
“We’ve been living in Nipaluna/Hobart for two years now and can’t imagine being elsewhere – it is a deeply special place,” he said.
Bowman and Besseny have just returned to Hobart after performing a successful run of shows in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, and Belgium.
Besseny said it had been “wonderful” to meet like-minded people “from far-reaching places who have similar approaches to music”.
“It’s a really lovely cross-cultural exchange … Hopefully some of the wonderful artists we’ve played with may eventually make the trip to play in Tasmania, too,” she said.
Bowman said the people Troth had encountered overseas were “fascinated by Tasmania and want to ask questions about where we are from”.
“I think this is a really important aspect of performing our music internationally, acting as ambassadors for the place we are lucky enough to live in,” he said.
Troth’s latest album, An Unfinished Rose, is available to stream now and physical copies will be released on August 15.
The duo will perform at the Grand Poobah on August 30, supporting another local band Raspberry Terrapin.
