Housing unaffordability is in the firing line as both major parties promise sweeping policy changes aimed at helping more people into a home if they are elected.
A re-elected Labor government has promised to expand access to the first home buyers scheme, making 100,000 homes available for first home buyers only and helping more people in their own home with just a 5 per cent deposit.

Peter Dutton’s centrepiece weekend announcement was a $1.25bn plan to allow first home buyers purchasing a newly built home to tax deduct payments on up to $650,000 of their mortgage for the first five years they live in the home, which would be means-tested to individuals on up to $175,000 and $250,000 for couples.
