All five Tasmanian Rivers Stores are set to close after its parent company handlers were unable to find a new buyer for the clothing retailer.

Mosaic Brands went into voluntary administration in October 2024 and was looking for a buyer for its brands including Rivers and Millers, which was “not able to be achieved”.

This means the remaining 136 Rivers stores are set to close including Hobart, Glenorchy, Kings Meadows, Devonport and Burnie.

In a Facebook post Rivers Burnie manager Anthea Leila said it was with a “heavy heart” that she was announcing the Burnie store would close in April.

She thanked her staff and customers for the support over her seven months managing the store.

“I would like to thank all of our customers for the massive support my staff and I have received since the company went into voluntary administration in October,” the post read.

All stores, including the five in Tasmania, are expected to close by mid-April, depending on stock levels.

Ms Leila encouraged shoppers to come in for some bargains as the store runs sales to try and clear out the stock.

Mosaic’s receivers and managers KPMG partners David Hardy thanked Mosaic and Rivers staff for their tireless work over the last few months.

“Unfortunately, a sale of Rivers was not able to be achieved,” Mr Hardy said.

“This means the receivers have made the difficult decision to wind down this iconic Australian brand.”

The closure makes Rivers the seventh brand in the Mosaic group to be axed following Rockmans, Autograph, Crossroads, W Lane and BeMe in September and Katies late last year.

KPMG say they are still looking to sell the remaining Mosaic Brands including Millers and Noni B.

Nationally, 650 are expected to lose their jobs following the closure.
