Road update 11.45am: The Brooker Highway has been reopened to motorists in both directions.
Update, 11am: Police have provided further details on the fatal crash that killed a teenager and seriously injured three others.
Acting Inspector Jason Klug spoke to media on Sunday morning, saying investigations into whether speed, alcohol or wearing of seatbelts contributed to the incident.
“Investigators will explore all avenues through their investigation, including interviewing those involved and other witnesses in this line of inquiry,” he said.
He said they believed the black ute, that held two passengers and a driver all aged 18 from the Hobart area, travelled north on the Brooker highway and was believed to have ignored a traffic signal.
The Acting Inspector said traffic signals were a specific focus for investigators.
The vehicle is then reportedly collided with a gray SUV travelling from Bathurst St, that only had the sole occupant who was rushed to hospital also with serious, but not life threatening, injuries.
Inspector Klug said the ute then hit a traffic light before coming to rest in the intersection.
The ute carrying the teenagers included the young man who died, while the driver and passenger suffered serious injuries.
He said all those injured were in a stable condition at a Hobart hospital.
“Any of these scenes are certainly traumatic for our responders and certainly for anyone else that witnessed the incident,” he said.
Update 10am: Emergency services continue to block off sections of the ABC roundabout at the intersection of a fatal crash on Sunday morning.
An 18-year-old Hobart teenager tragically lost his life in the two car collision.
The young man was a passenger in a black commodore ute, which officers say the male driver and another passenger were also seriously injured but non-life-threatening.
The driver and sole occupant of a gray SUV that appears to have hit the passenger of the ute was also rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
The front of both vehicles have been smashed in with debris still covering the road.
Police are expected to provide an update later this morning on investigations into the crash.
Initial: An 18-year-old Hobart man has sadly lost his life after a fatal crash at an intersection of the Brooker Highway in the early hours of Sunday morning, police confirm.
It’s the third fatality this weekend after a horrific motorcycle crash tragically killed two young men on the East Coast on Saturday.
Officers were alerted to the incident that occurred on the intersection of Bathurst St and the Brooker Highway just after 4am.
The teenager was the passenger of one of the vehicles.
Officers said the driver and another passenger of the same vehicle were seriously injured but escaped without life threatening injuries.
While in the second vehicle involved, police said the only occupant also received serious but not life threatening injuries.
Investigations into the crash are continuing. Police said road diversions were in place while investigations continued.
All traffic heading into town, south bound, on the Brooker Highway will be diverted onto Brisbane Street. All traffic heading north on the Brooker Highway from town will be diverted through Liverpool Street at the ABC roundabout.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 131 444.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
